'Awkward.' Recap: 4.20 - 'Sprang Break, Part 1'

This week on Awkward., Spring Break kicked off at Aunt Ally's beach house in Rosarito, Mexico; Jenna got accepted into college; Lissa returned a changed girl; Matty went to see his biological father; Jake and Tamara reconnected and Lacey put things in perspective for Jenna.

Jenna and Lacey were on their way to Ally's beach house when they were pulled over by two cops. Lacey decided to charm her way out of getting a ticket, while Jenna was busy checking her email. She was looking to hear from the last college she applied to who hadn't rejected her. After convincing the officers she and Jenna were sisters, Lacey almost got away with a warning until Jenna screamed in delight. The officers drew their guns and jumped back as mother and daughter shared the excitement of Jenna getting into Wyckoff College.

Already starting off on a celebratory note, Jenna and her mother finally arrived at the beach house, which surprisingly was ways away from the beach. They were greeted by Ally and Val, the latter of which was happy she would no longer lose sleep over Jenna not getting into college. Jenna was welcomed by Tamara, Matty, and Sadie, while Lacey promised a retelling of "almost getting murdered" to Ally and Val.

While outside getting groceries, Jenna was approached by Matty, who apologized for having her take the blame for their hook-up. It's a little too late, McKibben; however, Jenna accepted his apology with the hope that their vacation would help them reconnect. Um, Jenna...

Sadie was still incredibly bitter over not hearing back from her scholarship at Columbia. She went off about Jenna being happy for her college acceptance, while Sergio tried to comfort her. Sadie told him he didn't have to worry about his future; he was going to community college with the hopes of being a police officer like his dad. Sergio told her to keep her options open. He also paid her with compliments on her beauty and brains, which was enough to calm her down.

Jake was looking to head out to the beach, leaving Ally to complain about kids not knowing how to party anymore. Enter Theo and Cole, who livened things up immediately with the "ultimate party favor": Lissa, who was sporting a new grunge style. She embraced her beliefs as a "sinner," and was reunited with Tyler, her ex-foster brother/boyfriend.

Matty approached Jenna on the beach and asked her to accompany him to meet his biological father. Jenna was happy to accept his invitation as she read his intentions the wrong way. It became clear to her when Gabby showed up in a taxi, ready to go with Matty to San Diego. Jenna was crushed, and Lacey was there to witness the harsh blow. This led to a touching mother-daughter moment where Lacey advised Jenna to start focusing on herself now that she got accepted into a good college. "Don't spend the rest of your senior year hung up on Matty. Don't live in your head so much, either. Live in the moment." Excellent advice, indeed.

In a subplot, Jake and Tamara learned from a group of excited Japanese fangirls that their video for one of Jake's songs went viral in Japan. Realizing they had made it big, they decided to create a new video and reignite the spark of 'Jakara.'

Sadie and Sergio were cuddling in bed when her phone beeped with a message. She got accepted into the scholarship! Sergio's heartache turned to annoyance when Sadie started bad-mouthing Palos Hills and expressed excitement at moving away to New York. Later, he had enough and called her out on her rudeness. He made some good points about Palos Hills not being so bad, including the fact that he still lived there. Sadie agreed to cool it with the negativity.

Lissa and Tyler finally gave in to temptation, only to discover it wasn't as exciting as they thought it would be. It probably had something to do with them not being in a secret relationship anymore; the excitement was gone. They both agreed to end their relationship, and with a parting kiss, Tyler left Lissa and Mexico.

'Jakara' started work on their new video with the hopes of having more success. Their dreams were shattered when Tyler offered to translate some of the Japanese comments on their first video. The comments were bad, insulting both Jake and Tamara. This led to another fight and the end of 'Jakara' once again.

Jenna took a walk on the beach where she met a handsome, shirtless guy named Brian. He was in the Marines, looking to study marine sciences and use his time on active duty to pay for his education. This made Jenna reevaluate her life over the past year with all the drama involving Matty and not getting into college. She expressed excitement at venturing out into the world now that she knew she was going somewhere after graduation. Brian asked for her phone number with the intention of seeing her again before he went on active duty.

Matty met Daniel Durand, his biological father, who passed his time on the beach surfing and fishing. He and Matty bonded over being athletes when they were in school; Matty for soccer and his dad for football. Matty was overwhelmed by the experience, especially when he told everyone at the taco table when he and Gabby returned. Jenna was hurt that she wasn't part of the visit as she was the one who tracked his father down.

She later stopped by his room with the intention of talking about the visit, but in true McKibben fashion, he rudely shut her down. He didn't want Gabby to see them talking together, especially since she was just down the hall. After having the door slammed in her face, Jenna finally had enough. She was angry and bitter over his treatment of her. She decided to start focusing on herself and slammed her door on all the drama, in particular Matty. You go girl!

Next week is part 2 of the finale where a lot more crazy things occur. Jenna and Tamara hang out with Marines, while Lacey finally calls Matty out on his behavior toward Jenna.

Quote of the Week: Tamara to Jake - "Oh my god, they think you're Peeta, and I'm Katniss," when they were approached by the fangirls on the beach.

Awkward. airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on MTV.
