Starbucks announced Thursday, much to the delight of caffeine addicts everywhere, that it will start delivering its products in 2015.
CNBC noted that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said during a conference call that the company will start delivery in select markets next year.
""Imagine the ability to create a standing order of Starbucks delivered hot to your desk daily,"" Schultz said. ""That's our version of e-commerce on steroids.""
The company did not provide many details about the delivery service, likely because it’s still in the infancy stage, but did say the delivery option will be available on its mobile app. The coffee chain has been promoting its customer-loyalty program through its mobile payment app and said about 15 percent of all purchases are made with mobile devices.
The Associated Press reported that Starbucks decided to offer delivery after it had “disappointing quarterly sales.” Shares were down 4 percent and revenue was $4.18 billion, below the $4.24 billion analysts had expected.
The coffee retailer has started feeling the heat from the competition of fast-food companies that serve specialty coffees as well.
