Writer and director Alex Kurtzman is teasing that the planned Venom film will be darker than films focusing on Spider-Man.
"The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can't do with Spider-Man," Kurtzman told MTV News at the red carpet premiere of CBS' upcoming drama Scorpion.
Little of the film adaptation is known and the writer wasn't willing to reveal too much, simply saying that "Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He's a much darker character."
While it does make one a little excited about the eventual film in Sony's Spider-Man universe not lead by Peter Parker, there has been little else in the way of information, including what iteration of Venom might appear, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
It could, and probably will, be the most well-known character of Eddie Brock who bonded with the alien symbiote. Brock likes to think of himself somewhat of a hero despite his actions, which could potentially tie in with how Kurtzman's view that he is "much darker" than Spider-Man.
The current actor playing Spidey, Andrew Garfield spoke recently with The Daily Beast and feels that The Amazing Spider-Man 2's weaker box office result and fan reaction is due to studio edits.
He said he read and liked what Kurtzman and his former partner Roberto Orci wrote, which had a "thread running through it," but got lost.
"I think what happened was, through the pre-production, production and post-production, when you have something that works as a whole, and then you start removing portions of it ... once you start removing things and saying, 'No, that doesn't work,' then the thread is broken, and it's hard to go with the flow of the story."
He added that some executives at Sony had "problems with certain parts" of Amazing Spider-Man 2, which lead to the film's issues.
