It is often said that when people are behind the safety of a computer screen they become bolder and say things they normally wouldn't say in public and stars are no exception to the rule. Cee Lo Green may be the latest celebrity to stick his proverbial foot in his mouth with his tweets but he certainly isn't the first. Twitter is slowly creeping up on its 10th birthday but with the amount of scandals that have plagued the website since its 2006 inception, it seems like Twitter has been around much longer. Day after day, celebrities prove that some things are better left unsaid and that it is important to think before you speak AND before you tweet.
Here are just a few of the celebs who have taken it just a bit too far on social media. Who knew 140 characters could get you into so much trouble?

10. Chris Brown vs. Jenny Johnson
This is only one of many tweet wars that Chris Brown has found himself in. In 2012 after several snarky tweets towards Chris Brown had flown under the radar, comedienne Jenny Johnson finally got Brown's attention when he tweeted a photo of himself with the caption "I look old as f**." Johnson replied, "I know! Being a worthless piece of s**t can really age a person."
Apparently, in Brown's world, those are fighting words. The singer assailed Johnson with insulting tweets telling her to "suck my d**k h**." Johnson replied, sarcastically correcting Brown's grammar and condescendingly saying "your mom must be so proud of you." Brown's tweets got progressively more and more vulgar as he discussed farting on Johnson and even defecating on her!
The comedienne finally withdrew from the verbal sparring saying, "I have zero respect for a person who seems unapologetic for the terrible crime he committed and shows no signs of changing." Brown temporarily deleted his Twitter account and Johnson wrote a lengthy response to the incident in a blog post on GQ.

9. Spike Lee
Proving that vigilante justice should be left to the likes of Batman and other imaginary characters, Spike Lee committed this faux pas in an attempt to bring justice. In response to the killing of high school student Trayvon Martin, Lee tweeted the address of Martin's alleged killer George Zimmerman, or at least that's what he thought he did. The address actually belonged to Elaine and David McClain whose youngest son is named George Zimmerman but wasn’t connected to the other Zimmerman at all. The McClains reportedly feared for their lives after their address was publicly shared and sued Lee for damages. Lee also publicly apologized and compensated the couple.

8. Amanda Bynes
Actress Amanda Bynes was quite fond of Drake and wasn't ashamed to show it. She reportedly tweeted "I want Drake to murder my vagina" in 2013. The tweet was part of a larger downward spiral for Bynes that included more questionable social media activity and other outrageous behavior on her part. Bynes was diagnosed as being a bipolar schizophrenic and has reportedly received treatment and is now doing well. Bynes now says she's mortified about the tweet, according to TMZ

7. Stephen Colbert
After a tweet from Colbert’s show saying “I am willing to show #Asian community that I care introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever," many were offended. A social media campaign was started to have Colbert’s show taken off the air with the hashtag #CancelColbert trending during a week in April. Colbert sincerely apologized for the tweet from his personal Twitter and deleted the @ColbertReport handle so an incident like that would never happen again.

6.Courtney Love
Like many of the stars on this list, Courtney Love has run into trouble on Twitter more than once. Once she was accused of badmouthing a fashion designer and was sued, later settling the lawsuit out of court. The second time, Love was accused of making false statements about San Diego law firm Gordon & Holmes after they reportedly asked her to refrain from any substance abuse while they were representing her. Love fired the firm then went to Twitter to vent saying, "I was f***ing devastated when Rhonda J Holmes Esq was bought off." Love was sued again and the case is still pending.

4. Kenneth Cole
Shameless self promotional plugs are nothing new on social media, but using a country’s turmoil to promote your business is just wrong, as Kenneth Cole unfortunately had to learn the hard way. In the midst of the political strife in Egypt, Cole tweeted “Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is available online.” Cole later apologized.

3. Al Roker
Not only did this tweet raise controversy, technically, it broke rules too. NBC anchor Al Roker took pictures of potential jurors during his stint in jury duty and posted them to his Twitter. After newspapers caught wind of the slip up, Roker apologized but said that people needed to lighten up. “I’m not breaking laws … just trying to share the experience of jury duty. One that I think is important and everyone should take part in.”

2. Roland Martin
In response to a 2012 Superbowl ad featuring soccer star David Beckham, CNN anchor Roland Martin tweeted, "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!" The tweet caught the attention of GLAAD and other gay rights groups who deemed the tweets homophobic. Martin was suspended from CNN on Feb. 8, 2012. His suspension was lifted one month later. The following year, Martin would leave CNN. He now hosts his own show on TV One.

1. Cee Lo Green
This scandal is the most recent, and arguably most offensive Twitter scandal to come as of late. After narrowly avoiding being charged with rape for a 2012 incident where he allegedly slipped Ecstasy into a woman’s drink and then had sexual intercourse with her in his hotel room, Cee Lo Green decided to give his definition of rape via Twitter.
“If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously, so WITH Implies consent,” he wrote, adding, “People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!”
The tweets were later deleted and Green apologized saying, “I only intended on a healthy exchange to help heal those who love me from the pain I had already caused from this. Please forgive me as it was your support that got me thru this to begin with. I’d never condone the harm of any women. Thank you.” Green later deleted his account.
