San Francisco 49ers release RB LaMichael James

Running back LaMichael James was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. His agent Jeff Sperbeck tweeted the news Monday morning and the team later confirmed it.

James had asked the 49ers to release him and they gave it to him. He was due $641,718 this season and $792,577 in 2015. However he will be subject to waivers before he hits the open market, according to NFL.com.

"We wish LaMichael well in his career and hope for a long and healthy career for LaMichael James," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "(We) appreciate his contributions to the 49ers and continue to wish him well."

In two seasons with the 49ers James has struggled. During training camp he had to deal with an elbow injury. He has fallen behind Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde and Bruce Ellington on the 49ers depth charts. While he rushed for 5,082 yards in his college career, James hasn’t had any success with the 49ers. He has rushed for 184 yards on 41 carries, has five receptions for 45 yards, and didn’t score a touchdown in 15 games with the 49ers, according to ESPN.

With James gone the 49ers have just two tailbacks on their roster. Gore and Hyde are the two tailbacks. Marcus Lattimore is out with a knee injury and won’t be able to play until after week six. There is good news for the 49ers as they have signed receiver and special teams ace Kassim Osgood.

The question for James now is where will he go. He could possibly go to the Baltimore Ravens after they released Ray Rice.
