The rumor that wearing a bra will give you breast cancer can has officially been disproven according to a new study.
The findings of the study were published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology: Biomarkers & Prevention. Wearing a bra was first linked to causing cancer in the 1995 book Dressed to Kill, notes Medical News Today. It claimed that women who wear bras had a higher chance of developing cancer than women who don’t.
In the new study, researchers found that it didn’t matter how long, or at what age, the bra was worn, that it had no affect on risk of cancer. Researcher Lu Chen said "Given very limited biological evidence supporting such a link between bra wearing and breast cancer risk, our results were not surprising,” according to the NY Daily News.
Over 1,500 women aged 55 to 74 were studied by Chen and his team. They studied women with two subtypes of breast cancer, invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma. Included in the study was a control group of 469 women who did not have breast cancer. All data for the study was conducted via personal interviews.
Bras were thought to cause breast cancer because they were believed to stop waste from properly draining in the body.
