The most appropriate word to describe this debut effort by electro-classic newcomer Neolektra is, epic. Despite its relative brevity, at only 10 tracks and almost all coming in under five minutes, Neolektra's Birth of a Heroine takes listeners on a journey. There are musically many things at play in this album and blending classical violin with electric synthesized sounds is no easy feat. But the sounds come together in a miraculous and harmonious marriage that is pleasing to the ears and exciting to hear.
Firstly there is the music itself. A purely instrumental violin-based album that is captivating and interesting from beginning to end is difficult to pull off. Neolektra manages however with stunning violin riffs that are at times dizzying over the backdrop of a large scale score. But if you're worried about becoming overwhelmed by the many twists and turns Neolektra takes musically fear not. For as charging and intense as the musical swells can become, there are periods of smooth lush melodies that might give your favorite movie score a run for its money.
Not only is the music gorgeous but it is dynamic. There are no lags or filler tracks, every single song is different. From the charging opening track "Immortals" to the deliciously sensuous dance rhythm of "A Stolen Tango," Neolektra truly flexes her muscles of versatility while remaining true to her unique style of performance.
The album almost seems to tell a story flowing from what sound like calls to arms, to songs that place the listener right in the middle of a musical war zone to quivering lustful ballads. The album climaxes with the track six, the title track, moving to an optimistic close. Not many musicians are able to elicit visualizations with their music, but I could see where Neolektra's music wanted the listener to be every step of the way, and I felt myself there.
In a world that has become plagued with looped choruses, repetitive dance breaks and samples, songs can blur together, especially when they are all on one album.
Neolektra's Birth of a Heroine breaks this trend. Just when you are lulled into being accustomed to one sound, you are jolted into another musical, virtual reality.
It is safe to say that with her debut album, Neolektra has put a very strong foot forward and if she continues down this path, she could become one of music's newest heroines.
