Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig in talks to join Matt Damon in 'The Martian'

Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig are in early talks to star opposite Matt Damon in The Martian.

The science fiction film is about an astronaut who must try and survive after being left behind on a Martian colony, while NASA looks to try and rescue him from all the way back on Earth.

The film is an adaptation of the 2012 self-published book of the same name by Andy Weir, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ridley Scott is set to direct based upon Drew Goddard's script. Goddard was
originally slated to helm the film as well, but had to back out for Sinister Six.

No word on what Wiig and Chaistain's roles in the movie would be just yet.

Chastain is set to appear in three movies due out later this year, including the highly-anticipated Interstellar and A Most Violent Year. Wiig is starring in the upcoming film The Skeleton Twins, which hits theaters next week.

Production on The Martian is set to begin this fall and the film will hit theaters in 2015.

The film was originally scheduled for March 4, 2016, but 20th Century Fox decided to move up the release date for Nov. 25, 2015.
