Gustavo Cerati, who is a multi-Latin Grammy Award winner, died on Thursday at the age of 55 after being in a coma for four years after suffering a stroke.
The Buenos Aires hospital confirmed the Argentine musician's passing in a statement, Reuters reports. "This morning, patient Gustavo Certati passed away."
According to the Bueno Aires Herald, the singer and guitar player suffered a cardiac arrest the hospital said.
Cerati played both solo and with his band Soda Stereo, most often shortened to just Soda by fans. During the 1980s, the Latin rock group rose in popularity in Spain and Latin America.
The band, which also consisted of drummer Charly Alberti and bassist Zeta Bosio, eventually split up in 1997 after release seven albums over irreconcilable differences. They eventually reunited in 2007 one last time for a farewell tour.
While he was quite popular as a member of Soda, he also was successful as a solo artist winning two Latin Grammy awards in 2006 for best rock album and best rock song. He won another two Grammys four years later with his last album, Fuerza Natural.
