'Divergent' star Theo James to topline fifth 'Underworld' film

Theo James, who most recently starred in the YA film Divergent, has been tapped to return to the Underworld series.

He likely will return to the vampire/werewolf franchise due to an option on his contract from when he appeared in the 2013 film Underworld: Awakening as David, a vampire, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who was the first to report the news.

The fifth film in the franchise will be a continuation of the Underworld universe and will James will be joined by two new female characters, who have not yet been cast.

As previiously reported, Lakeshore Entertainment will develop this latest film, with Cory Goodman on board to direct the script. No director has been announced.

Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing the untitled fifth film, which is eyeing a spring filming date.

Awakening performed the strongest at the box office, grossing $160 million worldwide. Kate Beckinsale previously toplined the series, with the exception of the prequel film, Rise of the Lycans.

James has finished shooting the Divergent sequel Insurgent, as well as London Fields and Franny.
