The Cincinnati Bengals put tight end Tyler Eifert on injured reserve with a designation to return on Wednesday. The move was a result of Eifert having an elbow injury.
The injury occurred during Sundays game against the Baltimore Ravens. Late in the first quarter Eifert fell awkwardly after a 14-yard reception that put the Bengals in goal-line territory. Eifert clutched his right arm right after he went down and went into the locker room for observations. The Bengals haven’t said what the injury is other than it’s an elbow injury, and replays seem to indicate that Eifert dislocated his elbow as he was going down, according to ESPN.
Eifert won’t be able to return to practice for six weeks. He won’t be able to play for eight weeks. NFL teams are allowed to use the IR designation one time during the season.
The loss of Eifert isn’t good for the Bengals. He had 39 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season last year, according to Sports Illustrated. He is a rising offensive star in the NFL. With Eifert out, Alex Smith, rookie Ryan Hewitt, and Jermaine Gresham will help fill in for Eifert.
Receiver Mohamed Sanu and running backs Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard should also have bigger roles while Eifert is out. Eifert is the second Bengals player to be out with an injury. Receiver Marvin Jones is also out with an injury. Jones is out until after the week four bye.
