Apple unveils larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Apple announced on Tuesday what everyone more or less already knew, that the next iPhone model was coming out and that it would be bigger, this time comparable in size to other popular smartphones.

At a live event held at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts, Apple marketing head Philip Schiller showed off the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, CBS News reports. The regular model will now boast an improved 4.7-inch screen, while the Plus model will blow that up to 5.5 inches.

The iPhone 6 has more than 1 million pixels, while Plus features over 2 million, which provides a "stunning display," Schiller said during the presentation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both screens will feature "Retina HD." The camera is also improved and now features image stabilization.

The iPhone 6 has an anodized aluminum back and is thinner than the previous models. The regular model will be 6.8mm thick, while the 6 Plus is only slightly thicker at 7.1mm.

With a bigger screen size and resulting body, Apple claims that the 6 Plus will have much better battery life at 16 hours of standby. The 6 remains at the iPhone 5's 10 hours of standby. Listening to music, however, is where the difference between the 6's and 5's will be noticeable. The 6 comes in at 50 hours of playback, while the 6 Plus sits at 80 hours.

The iPhone 6 will start at $199 and go up to $399 depending on storage capacity (16, 64 and 128GB), and the 6 Plus starts at $299 and caps out at $499, featuring the same three storage specs.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will go on sale starting Sept. 19, with pre-orders going live this Friday.
