This Week in Comedy: 'Undateable', 'Always Sunny', & Comic-Con News

Chris D'Elia and co. were fighting an uphill battle when their new NBC sitcom Undateable unrolled during the summer and was forced to compete with the NBA and NHL Finals, Game of Thrones final episodes of season four, as well as a general public that tends to not stay inside and watch first-airing sitcoms during a warm summer evening. They pulled off the unlikely, however, as season 2 was picked up.

The show, which, aside from D'Elia, stars fellow stand up comedians Brent Morin, Ron Funches, and Rick Glassman. It's yet another project from Scrubs and Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence, whose other new show, Ground Floor was also renewed for a second season.

Speaking of sitcoms, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob Mcelhenny will be appearing in next season's premiere episode of The Mindy Project as Lou Tookers, cousin of Ike Barinholtz's character Morgan.

The characters of Always Sunny have "written" a self-help book. The January release coincides with the start of the new season of Sunny, and it's not yet clear if the book will reflect of the story lines in the new season.

Continuing to add to the already diverse array of guest stars lined up for next season, Oscar winning director Spike Jonze is also slated to make an appearance on season four of Girls

Girls' Allison Williams has been cast in a lead role in NBC's upcoming live performance of Peter Pan. NBC previously aired a live performance of The Sound of Music in 2013.

The film Jon Stewart made during his hiatus from The Daily Show (John Oliver is still thanking him for that) has gotten a release date. Rosewater starting November 7.

Jim Gaffigan, a comedian built for the sitcom world, had his show, The Gaffigan Show, picked up for ten episodes by TV Land.

Comedy Central continues to be a home to unique and offbeat shows, as Nathan For You and Drunk History were both renewed for third seasons.

Comic-Con offered a look at five minutes of the Family Guy/The Simpsons crossover. The special hour-long episode should inject some excitement into both series. Between this, FXX's upcoming 12-day Simpsons marathon, The Simpsons World online archive, as well as the upcoming The Simpsons/Futurama crossover episode, the show has been generating an unusually high amount of buzz.

Also from Comic-Con, Kevin Smith has released the trailer for his next film, Tusk, which looks to have a similar tone to Red State but perhaps with a bit more Kevin Smith humor injected. He also announced plans for a SModcast-based trilogy based in the world of Tusk.

And finally, Edgar Wright, one of the funniest and delightfully weird directors working, has signed on to direct Grasshopper Jungle, about a group of teens from Iowa who accidentally release six-foot-tall grasshoppers. It's based on a novel of the same name.
