The San Antonio Spurs will hire Becky Hammon as an assistant coach, after her 2014 WNBA season concludes. She will become the first female assistant coach in NBA history.

This comes just days after the NBA Players Association elected Michele Roberts to lead the union. She was also the first woman to lead a American professional sports union, as we previously reported.
Hammon has played in the WNBA for 16 seasons. She was voted an All-Star six times and was a two-time all-WNBA player, according to SB Nation.
Spurs head coach Greg Popovich told NBA.com, that he looks forward to bringing Hammon on to his staff.
“Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs,” he said.
In July of 2011, Hammon was voted one of the top 15 WNBA players of all time.
Hammon started her career with the New York Liberty in 1999 after not being drafted. She spent eight seasons with the team before being traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007, where she spent the rest of her career.
