Two of the biggest stars in the game of golf had very different days on Friday. Rory McIlroy fired a four-under-par 67 to take the lead halfway through the PGA Championship. Tiger Woods carded his second consecutive three-over 74 and missed the cut.
McIlroy’s second-round 67 combined with the 66 he shot in the first round, gives him a one stroke advantage over Jason Day and Jim Furyk.
McIlroy is looking to continue his recent stretch of dominance. Through two rounds at the PGA Championship, he is nine under par. Prior to this tournament, he won the Bridgestone Invitational at 15 under par and claimed the British Open Championship with a 17-under-par performance. That means that in his last 10 rounds of competitive golf, he is 41 under par, according to The New York Times.
McIlroy remains determined to continue playing at such a high level.
“If I’m two ahead going into the weekend here, I’m going to try to get three ahead,” he said. “And if I’m three ahead, I’m going to try to get four ahead and if I’m four ahead, I’m going to try to get five ahead. I’m just going to try to keep the pedal down.”
Woods, meanwhile, could never quite find his rhythm. After pulling out of the final round of the World Golf Championship at Firestone, he showed up at the PGA Championship on Wednesday ready to compete. He failed to get to the top of the leaderboard, finishing six strokes over par. This is the fourth time in his professional career that he has missed the cut at a major, reports The Associated Press.
