Showtime's Ray Donovan will return for its third season, but creator and showrunner Ann Biderman has decided she will not.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first learned the news, Biderman has decided to step down as showrunner, but will remain on board as a creative consultant.
while Deadline is reporting that the network has decided not to renew her contract, which was up after two seasons and the problem is apparently that the show continued to blow past its budget during its current two seasons.
"Ann Biderman is a uniquely gifted writer and creator," David Nevins, Showtime president, said. "She has done great work on Ray Donovan from her very first pitch through the first two amazing seasons. Ray Donovan has become a signature asset for Showtime, and Ann will continue as a creative consultant on the show."
In need of a showrunner, the network has turned to executive producer and writer David Hollander for a replacement. He was responsible for the second season's highest rated episode.
The third season of Ray Donovan, which stars Liev Schreiber (right), is set to begin production in early 2015 and the second season will close out its run on Sept. 28.
