Pierce Brosnan's spy film 'The November Man' opens quietly at box office

Pierce Brosnan's latest film The November Man opened quietly on Wednesday at the box office, only managing to earn enough to hit the fifth spot.

The Relativity Media spy film grossed only $862,000 in its first day of release ahead of Labor Day weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The studio hoped November Man, which also stars Olga Kurylenko and Luke Bracey, would start off a little stronger, despite opening in the middle of the week.

In the film, Brosnan plays an ex-CIA agent who is convinced to leave retirement in order to keep a witness safe and alive. Taking the mission ends up putting him in the crosshairs of his old CIA protege.

Relativity, who independently financed and released the film on its own, was eyeing a possible $12 million six-day opening, but the soft start suggests the film might be lucky to snag $10 million.

The weekend is expected to be a quiet one, with holdovers dominating the box office, Variety notes. Guardians of the Galaxy, which earned $1.5 million on Wednesday, is projected to top the box office once again and gross $13 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will follow with a projected $12 million weekend and grossed $1.1 million on Wednesday. If I Stay and Let's Be Cops followed just ahead of November Man.
