Maria Sharapova showed a sassy side following her match with Swedish Professional player, Ana Ivanovic. Sharapova openly questioned Ivanovic’s reasoning behind asking for medical attention during the match, claiming there was something off about the timing of Ivanovic’s request.
The two tennis players competed against each other at the Western & Southern open in Cincinatti on Saturday. However, according to SI, Ivanovic called for an injury time during the third set, postponing Sharapova’s serve and upsetting the Russian native.
Sharapova allegedly yelled “check her blood pressure” to the chair umpire, appearing frustrated at the delay of game. Ivanovic ended up defeating Sharapova, who spoke with a reporter following the match and doubted the legitimacy of Ivanovic needing medical attention.
“It was just a strange timing. I'm not sure kind of how it happened,” Sharapova told Tennis Now. “Just kind of came out of nowhere. Just don't know what to do in that situation, because you either sit down, are they going to take a medical timeout, but then they don't and you got to get up and then you got to serve and it's 15 All. The timing was a bit strange, but she looked OK.”
Although Sharapova openly questioned her reasoning, Ivanovic assured the press her brief illness was due to something she had ate.
“When my coach was coming out,” Ivanovic told SI. “I kept telling him I don't feel good, like my stomach is really upset. Then it really build up in the third set and I was not feeling fine.”
