Boiling Point is a pop/rock band from Minnesota that celebrates the ideals of being a devoted Christian through their edgy tracks and clever lyrics. While their music is less subtle than other Christian rock groups, such as Relient K, it makes sense as to why their message is delivered more directly due to who this band is.
The band is made up of Eric Bjorklund (lead vocals, guitar and piano), Jon Canfield (vocals, electric guitar), Taylor Wilson (vocals, bass guitar) and Scott Bjorklund (drums) from Minneapolis, MN. The lead singer is also the Director of Emerging Church Music and Outreach & Young Adult Ministries Coordinator at the Centennial United Methodist Church in Roseville MN. Bjorklund graduated from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago with an M.A. in Theological Studies. In addition he has led the music at a variety of UM churches and even worked at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City.
The bands first album Rules of the Broken was released in 2011 and in the following year they released an EP titled If Love. Now their next album which is to be released Sept 16th titled More is sending out a message with clever lyrics and a catchy beat. On the bands Facebook page they wrote, “what keeps people coming back is the band’s emotional depth and willingness to be real with their fans through their songs, their live performances and their life's example.” They identify their influencers to be popular bands such as the Foo Fighters, Switchfoot, Matchbox 20, The Fray, and Goo Goo Dolls.
The album features ten tracks including their hits “More,” “Brand New Day,” and “When You’ve Lost It All.” My favorite songs had to have been the first two, which are “More”, and “Brand New Day.” The messages are meaningful and catchy with a beat that makes it easy to listen to. I would probably later on use their lyrics for a profile picture or Facebook status honestly. The thing about most Christian rock music is that if no one ever told you they were in that genre, you would never know. Their songs take you on a journey for self-discovery with a positive outlook from start to finish.
In general I would give the album a 8 out of 10 as the songs are inspiring to a point but it would be nice if there was a little more of a range between the music. It was great that it all flowed and I never knew just where to push ‘pause’ but I was always looking for waiting for something else a little different. For those who are into a pop Christian feel, these guys are for you and for anyone who wants to feel hipster, even more of a reason to check this out because they are starting to pick up the pace to the big time.
