New York Mets’ starting pitcher Bartolo Colon won his 200th game on Friday as the Mets edged the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4.
Colon threw eight innings, giving up just one run on six hits and no walks. He struck out six, as he allowed only one batter to advance past first base. That batter was Marlon Byrd, who homered in the bottom of the seventh.
Colon, 41 years old, became the third Dominican-born pitcher to reach the 200-win plateau. The other two in the club are Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal, reports The Associated Press.
"I'm really happy to be in that category," Colon said through an interpreter. "I'm expecting a call from those guys."
He has played 17seasons in the Major Leagues, suiting up for eight different teams. He has won at least 20 games in a season twice and recorded a pair of 18-win seasons. In 2005, he claimed the AL Cy Young Award after posting a 21-8 record and an ERA of 3.48, according to baseball-reference.com .
Colon almost did not reach the 200-win milestone on Friday, as the bullpen allowed three runs to score in the ninth inning, but the Mets’ offensive output proved to be enough.
Travis d’Arnaud smacked a home run, and Daniel Murphy amassed his fifth straight multihit game.
