Less than one week after captaining the NL Home Run Derby team, Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was taken out of the team’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fourth inning.
The injury is reported to be a cramp in the tensor fasciae latae of his left thigh. It is an injury that is commonly suffered by runners, and that’s just what Tulowitzki was doing when he got huert. He was running down the first base line after hitting a grounder to short.
"I felt it grab when I was going down the line," Tulowitzki said, reports MLB.com. "There wasn't a lot of pain but there was enough that I thought I should come out of the game to be safe."
Tulowitzki is having a phenomenal season so far. He is lead the NL in batting average (.340), on-base percentage (.432) and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage – 1.035). He ranks third in the league in slugging percentage (.603), according to ESPN.com.
The Rockies not only lost their top player in the game, but they also fell to the Pirates 3-2 in 11 innings. Colorado had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the 11th, but failed to do so. Jordy Mercer ended the game in the bottom half of the inning with a walk-off hit to left-center, reports The Associated Press.
The Rockies are just 12-30 since the beginning of June.
