The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year. Millions upon millions of people tune in to see the NFL champion crowned on the first Sunday in February every year. To have the honor of hosting the big game is truly something that many cities would salivate at the opportunity to do. The first 47 Super Bowls were either in a dome or a warm-weather city. This past year was the first Super Bowl held outside as it was hosted by New York and New Jersey at MetLife Stadium. Luckily, the weather held up for the game, which was fortunate because the following day, the area was hit with a big snow storm. While this was the first Big Apple Super Bowl, other cities have hosted the big game numerous times. Miami and New Orleans have been the most frequent host cities, each seeing the big game come their way 10 times. Here is a ranking of the most frequent Super Bowl host cities:

Minneapolis/St. Paul
The Twin Cities hosted Super Bowl XXVI which saw the Washington Redskins defeat the Buffalo Bills 37-24. Super Bowl LII will be played in the Vikings’ new stadium in 2018.

San Francisco Bay Area
Super Bowl XIX was played in Stanford, Calif. and saw the home-town San Francisco 49ers hoist the Lombardi Trophy after a 38-16 win over the Miami Dolphins. The 50th anniversary Super Bowl will be played in Santa Clara, Calif.

Detroit
In Super Bowl XVI, the San Francisco 49ers won their first Lombardi Trophy with a 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2006, the Pittsburgh Steelers captured their fifth Super Bowl crown with a 21-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Atlanta
In a rematch of the previous year’s Super Bowl, the Dallas Cowboys reigned supreme again with a 30-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Jan. 1994. Six years later Atlanta hosted the big game again; this time, the Saint Louis Rams captured their only title with a 23-16 defeat of the Tennessee Titans.

In Jan. 1974, Houston was the site where the Miami Dolphins won their second straight Super Bowl title. Thirty year later, the New England Patriots claimed the first of their back-to-back titles in Houston. Houston is scheduled to host its third Super Bowl in 2017.

Phoenix Area
Glendale, Ariz. hosted one of the most memorable and historic Super Bowls of all-time in 2008, when the New York Giants denied the 18-0 New England Patriots perfection with a 17-14 victory. The Phoenix area also hosted Super Bowl XXX, which saw the Dallas Cowboys win their fifth Super Bowl championship. Super Bowl XLIX will be played in Glendale.

San Diego
The first two Super Bowls in San Diego featured John Elway and the Denver Broncos. In Super Bowl XXII, Denver lost to the Washington Redskins 42-10. Ten years later, Elway and company won the first of their back-to-back titles with a 31-24 win over the Green Bay Packers. In Super Bowl XXXVII, Jon Gruden guided the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 48-21 victory over his former team (the Oakland Raiders).

Tampa Bay
The most memorable moment from a Super Bowl played in Tampa Bay came in 1991, when the Buffalo Bills fell to the New York Giants 20-19 on a last-second field attempt that went wide right. Tampa Bay also hosted Super Bowl XLIII, which saw the Arizona Cardinals stage a fourth-quarter comeback that was for naught when Santonio Holmes make a spectacular catch in the endzone with 35 seconds left.

Los Angeles
Los Angeles hosted the first Super Bowl, which the Green Bay Packers won 35-10 over the Kansas City Chiefs. Six years later, the Miami Dolphins had a Hollywood ending to the 1972 season becoming the first team to go 17-0. In Super Bowl XIV, Terry Bradshaw and the Pittsburgh Steelers won their fourth Lombardi Trophy in six years.

New Orleans
Three of the Super Bowls in New Orleans have featured the New England Patriots. In Super Bowl XX, they lost 46-10 to the Chicago Bears, and in Super Bowl XXXI, they fell 35-21 to the Green Bay Packers. In 2002, the Pats won their first Super Bowl with a 20-17 upset of the Saint Louis Rams. New Orleans was also the site of Super Bowl XLVII, which featured a 34-minute blackout early in the third quarter; the Baltimore Ravens won the game 34-31 over the San Francisco 49ers. This was legendary linebacker Ray Lewis’ last game.

The Green Bay Packers claimed their second straight Super Bowl with a 33-14 win over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II. One year later, Joe Namath and the New York Jets knocked off the Baltimore Colts 16-7 to win Super bowl III. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys have squared off in the Super Bowl twice in Miami. Both times the Steelers won by four points. In the most recent Super Bowl in Miami, the New Orleans Saints edged the Indianapolis Colts 31-17.
