Comedic actor Sasha Baron Cohen is no stranger to getting people upset with some of his movies. But he isn't even done with his latest, Grimsby, and has already found a way to upset an entire town.
According to The Guardian , the upcoming comedy, directed by Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me), has upset the Northern England town of the same name. Believing that the new movie will represent the definitive connection to the town, the residents fear that the movie will be giving them a bad name.
Known primarily for its fishing industry, the town of Grimsby is the fictional home of Cohen's main character, meaning that a great deal of the comedy in the film may be directed its way, as The Hollywood Reporter notes. With pictures on the set showcasing characters peeing out of windows, passed out drunk on benches, or mothers offering beers to children on the street, the resident feels that this satire is unearned and unneeded for their town.
Although residents are upset, filming is not taking place in their town. Rather, production has been happening in the port town of Tilbury, where its depiction of filth and a place of despair doesn't seem to be winning over their town either.
Considering that Cohen also negatively represented Kazakhstan in Borat and Staines during Ali G, he appears to be no stranger to giving European cities their fair share of abuse, earned or not. While the residents of Grimsby and Tilbury may not like it, the new Cohen comedy is set to hit theaters on July 31, 2015.
