Pau Gasol is joining the Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls may have missed out of getting Carmelo Anthony, but they added another All-Star caliber player instead by signing Pau Gasol.
Gasol, who has been with the Los Angeles Lakers the last six years, was an unrestricted free agent, and there were talks of a sign-and-trade between the Lakers and the Bulls. However the talks broke down, so Gasol went ahead and joined Chicago on his own, reports The Chicago Tribune .
Gasol announced the move on his Twitter account Saturday.
Gasol, who averaged 17.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game last season, was also being pursued by the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
The Bulls do need to clear cap space for Gasol. If they are unable to make any trades in the next few days, some cap relief may come on Wednesday, when Carlos Boozer is released due to an amnesty provision in his contract, relieving the Bulls of his $16.8 million salary.
In addition to trying to make room for Gasol, Chicago will look to create enough space to add Nikola Mirotic, their 2011 first-round draft pick. Mirotic has been playing in Spain and plans on coming to the NBA next season, according to ESPN Chicago.
