Luc Besson's Lucy proved mind can overpower muscle because of its grand earnings.
The Universal Pictures film features Scarlett Johansson as Lucy, the central character in the film, who is described as an accidental psychokinetic. The studio estimated the earnings on Sunday when the film hit North American cinemas this weekend.
According to Universal's president of domestic distribution, Nikki Rocco, audiences were glued to the original story about the central character gaining superhuman powers from using more of her brain.
Other movies in theaters include Hercules, which earned an estimate of $29 million and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which earned $16.4 million. Purge: Anarchy earned $9.9 million, Planes: Fire & Rescue earned $9.3 million, Sex Tape earned $6 million, Transformers: Age of Extinction earned $4.6 million, And So It Goes earned $4.6 million, Tammy earned $3.4 million, and A Most Wanted Man earned $2.7 million.
According to FOX News, people always wanted more of Johansson in an action role since she did perform in movies such as The Island (2005), Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012) and Captain America 2 (2014).
Rocco mentioned that "The main reasons for coming to see the film were the story, and then Scarlett. She's very diversified in what she does. Luc brought out the best of her in this movie."
The earning of $44 million is the biggest for Besson's career and is as much as four times more than the Zoe Saldana's Columbiana.
