Cleveland Indians right-handed starting pitcher Justin Masterson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right knee.
He has struggled so far this season, posting a 4-6 record with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts. Over his last five starts, he has pitched a total of 18 innings, yielding 19 runs, 27 hits and 27 walks.
In his most recent outing (against the New York Yankees), he gave up five runs on six hits in just two-plus innings of work. His pitches rarely topped 90 mph and only 24 of his 54 pitches were strikes.
"Masty's first inclination was wanting to pitch through it, which we respect," manager Terry Francona said, reports The Associated Press. "The way it was going, though, we thought we'd DL him and get him some treatment."
Masterson, who was the Indians’ opening day starter this year, made the All-Star Game last year. He posted a 14-10 record with a 3.45 ERA. He tossed three of his four career shutouts in 2013.
In seven seasons, he has won 59 games and has a 4.16 ERA, according to baseball-reference.com .
The Indians, who went to the playoffs last year, sit in third place in the American League Central. They are 43-45 and are six and a half games out of first place.
