Twenty-three minutes into the semi-final game of the World Cup, German player Miroslav Klose scored his 16th goal of the tournament, breaking the previous record held by retired Brazilian striker Ronaldo.
Klose has had a long career on the German team, racking up a whopping 71 goals over the course of his four World Cup ventures. The striker first appeared in the World Cup in 2002, reports Yahoo News, scoring 5 goals throughout the tournament and making it all the way to the championship game.
Ronaldo, a retired Brazilian soccer player who played in a total of 3 World Cup tournaments throughout his career, is known to be one soccer's greatest players and set the previous record in 2006, says BBC Sports. It is only a coincidence that Klose was able to break Ronaldo’s record in today’s game against Brazil but at least it provided an exciting aspect to the game.
While the two teams have been top-runners from the start of the tournament, Germany was favored to win and is currently holding a lead of 5-0.
