Veteran right tackle Eric Winston signed with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday.
According to ESPN, Winston signed a one-year contract with the Seahawks. He was voted president of the NFL Players Association in March. He took over the presidency from Domonique Foxworth. Foxworth had just completed his final season in the NFL when he was elected president in March 2012. Any player who is on the active roster the previous season is eligible to run for the presidency in March, according to USA Today.
Winston announced the news on Twitter.
"Season finally starts for me today!" Winston tweeted. "Looking forward to chasing a ring with the Seahawks!! Time go to work!"
The signing of Winston is good news for the Seahawks as they have been unstable at the right tackle position. Breno Giacomini, who was their right tackle last season, signed with the New York Jets in the offseason. Offensive lineman Michael Bowie and rookie Justin Britt have been competing for the spot that Giacomini left. Winston will now be competing for that spot also.
Winston will be entering his ninth season in the NFL. Last year he played with the Arizona Cardinals and struggled. He was ranked 69th out of 76 offensive tacklers by Pro Football Focus, according to NFL.com. The Seahawks are the fourth team for Winston in four years. He has also played for the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Cardinals. He has played in 119 games in eight seasons.
