Former Southern Methodist University commit Emmanuel Mudiay has signed a one-year contract with a team in China.
Mudiay who last week left the school will sign a one-year contract worth $1.2 million with the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the China Basketball Association, according to CBS Sports.
Mudiay is the potential number one pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, according to ESPN.
One coach told ESPN that Mudiay’s development will be more than just on the basketball court.
“He’ll be able to athletically overwhelm other players in China, but the key with him will be socially,” the coach said. “That won’t be easy.
Mudiay is the first big name college recruit since Brandon Jennings in 2008 to decide to play overseas instead of in the NCAA, according to USA Today.
Last year Guangdong Southern went 30-4 and finished in first place in the China Basketball Association standings, according to Asia-basket.com.
Mudiay was the number five overall recruit in the nation last year and was going to be SMU’s most important player this year.
SMU was a projected preseason top 15 team.
