Early Wrap: MTV VMA nods announced, Jason Biggs fails at humor, Elaine Stritch dies

It was a busy day yesterday for fans of MTV’s Video Music Awards. Beyonce is in the lead, with a stellar eight nominations this year. Other stars to get a nod include Eminem, Rihanna, and Iggy Azalea. Azalea was nominated for Best Female Video, Art Direction, and Pop Video. The VMA’s are taking place this year at The Forum on August 24.

Actor Jason Biggs made light of the Malysian Airlines tragedy. The celebrity, known for his work on the film, American Pie, was quite light-hearted on his Twitter page, asking if anyone would like to buy his Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles. Not so funny, after a passenger plane went down over the Ukraine yesterday, near the Russian border. Malaysian Airlines has been having a difficult year. A Malaysian Airlines flight disappeared back in March.

It was announced that David Fincher’s Gone Girl will be opening, at the New York Film Festival. Gone Girl stars Ben Affleck. Fincher also opened The Social Network at the New York Film Festival. The director is known for the edgy film, Fight Club. This one is also a “nasty” film, according to the film’s composer, Trent Reznor. The opening date is slated for September 27.

Fans acknowledged celebrities who were celebrating birthdays. Country singer Luke Brian also celebrated his birthday, and Baywatch’s David Hasselhoff celebrates 62 years on the planet. Hasselhoff was on the television show, Knight Rider, and became a judge on America’s Got Talent. Here’s to him!

Elaine Stritch died at age 89. The Tony Award winning actress was known for starring in the Broadway musicals, Pal Joey and Bus Stop. Stritch’s raspy voice wowed audiences in the musical, Company, when she sang “The Ladies who Lunch.” Her one woman show, won an Emmy. We’ll miss you.
