Dirk Nowitzki has two goals left for the remainder of his career: No. 1 – stay with the Dallas Mavericks and No. 2 – win another championship. He inched closer to achieving both of them by signing a new three-year, $25 million deal with the Mavs.
Nowitzki’s deal could have included an extra $60 million, but the 16-year veteran opted to leave the money in hopes that the organization will put it towards signing other players to compete for a championship, reports ESPN Dallas.
Nowitzki, who has spent his entire career with the Mavs, has averaged 22.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game over the course of his career. He guided the franchise to its only two trips to the NBA Finals. He was named Finals MVP as the team captured its first championship in 2011, according to NBCDFW.com.
With the extra money, Dallas was able to go out and spend on some notable free agents. The Mavericks wrestled Chandler Parsons away from the Houston Rockets. They resigned Devin Harris and traded for Tyson Chandler, who played an integral part on the 2011 championship team.
