Derek Jeter’s season-long farewell tour got a very special visitor on Wednesday night. Former President of the United States George W. Bush came out onto the field to honor Jeter before what would be his final game visiting the Texas Rangers at Global Life Park in Arlington, Texas.
Jeter has received numerous gifts this season but the tribute from Bush was the first time one of the gifts was another person.
“Not too many people can say they’ve had the President come out and honor them in a ceremony,” Jeter said, according to The New York Daily News. “It meant a lot to me. That’s a pretty special feeling when you have a president come out and give you something to honor you. That’s definitely a memory I’ll have for a long time.”
Bush presented Jeter with an autographed photo of the two of them from the 2001 World Series. Bush owned the Rangers before he became president.
Jeter also received cowboy boots with his name and the Yankees logo on them from former Rangers Michael Young and Ivan Rodriguez, reports USA Today.
Young and Rodriguez also presented Jeter with a $10,000 donation to his Turn 2 Foundation.
