Cut fastball leads to pinstripe success for Brandon McCarthy

When Brandon McCarthy met with New York Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild and catcher Brian McCann after being traded to the Bronx from the Arizona Diamondbacks, he was informed that his cut fastball would available for use in his arsenal.
This decision proved to be a wise move, as the righty hurled six innings on Saturday in New York’s 7-1 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out nine while not issuing any walks, according to The New York Times.
The cutter, meanwhile, continued to be present with his new team. He has thrown it 10 times in his first two starts for the Yankees. In his final two appearances as a Diamondback, he threw it just once, reports USA Today.
"He has the ability to do what he did tonight every fifth day," McCann said. "I truly believe that. I think his stuff's always been there. What I saw today and from his first start, he's got it."
The Yankees hope McCarthy will provide some relief in the starting rotation, as 80 percent of their Opening Day rotation is currently on the disabled list.
