On his first day with his new ball club, the New York Yankees third baseman Chase Headley provided the late-game heroics. His walk-off RBI base hit in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Bronx Bombers a 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers.
Headley, who was brought in to help the Yankees’ offense as they try to compete in the competitive AL East, is excited with any opportunity he is afforded.
“Unbelievable,” Headley said, reports The Associated Press . “I’m excited to be here. I can’t wait to help, and just to be a part of this great franchise.”
Headley almost came through in the 12th, when he stepped into the batter’s box with the bases loaded in the scoreless game. Instead, he grounded out to end the inning and the scoring threat.
Both the Yankees and the Rangers scored one run in the 13th inning. Texas’ was on a home run off the bat of J.P. Arencibia, and New York’s came when Jacoby Ellsbury drove in Brett Gardner.
Headley, who is in the final year of his contract, hit .229 for the Padres this season with seven homers and 32 RBI. This month, he turned it on, recording an average of .323.
“I applaud our ownership group and the work they’re doing upstairs in the front office,” manager Joe Girardi said, according to The New York Times. “They are trying to get us better. It’s the second move that we’ve made, and [Brandon] McCarthy has pitched well for us since we got him. We’re trying to upgrade our lineup and our defense, and I applaud it.”
