San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin has been suspended for 25 games for twice failing a drug test. He tested positive for an amphetamine that is banned by the Major League Baseball Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Maybin, who is the first player this season to be issued a suspension, claims that positive result on the test is from an ingredient present in the medication he takes for his attention deficit disorder.
"I want to assure everyone that this was a genuine effort to treat my condition, and I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career,” Maybin said, according to MLB.com . “I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and I will take my punishment and will not challenge my suspension. I apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Padres organization. I look forward to returning to the field and contributing to the success of my club."
Maybin, who will be able to return to the active Padres roster on Aug. 20, is hitting .247 with one home run and nine RBI this season. In his eight years in the Majors, he has compiled a career batting average of .248, reports The Sports Network .
