American tennis player Victoria Duval diagnosed with cancer

US women’s tennis player Victoria Duval has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the white bloods cells that is common in young people, but most that are diagnosed with it overcome it, according to the AP.

Duval was diagnosed prior to Wimbledon in England and had more tests in the US that confirmed the diagnosis, according to ESPN.

In a statement Duval said, that she will have to step away from competition for a short period and that she received the diagnosis prior to her first round qualifying at Wimbledon but she wanted to continue to compete.

Last year at the US Open, Duval, ranked 298, beat Sam Stosur, a former US Open winner and the 11 seed, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

Duval was born in Florida, but grew up in Haiti. At age seven she was held at gunpoint while her aunt’s house was robbed and in 2010 he father was badly injured in the earthquake in Haiti.
