In another effort to ratchet up the popularity of ebooks, Amazon is offering a new service called Kindle Unlimited. The all-you-can-read subscription costs $9.99 a month and includes over 600,000 books.
Amazon said that the Kindle Unlimited will be available on Kindle devices, plus the Kindle app for other smartphones and tablets.
The books available at launch include J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, as well as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series and Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Audiobooks will also be available, including Life of Pi, Water for Elephants and The Handmaid’s Tale, from Audible. A three-month subscription is included in Kindle Unlimited.
A free 30-day trial is available starting today.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the service is not unheard of. Scribd has a service that costs $8.99 a month and has over 400,000 books. Oyster’s service has over 500,000 books available for $9.95 a month.
