The San Francisco 49ers officially have a new home. On Thursday, their brand new, state-of-the-art stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. opened up with the official ribbon cutting ceremony.
Levi’s Stadium, which cost $1.2 billion, will hold about 68,500 fans. When it hosts the Super Bowl in February 2016, the capacity is expected to be expanded to 75,000, reports The Associated Press .
While the stadium clearly represents the 49ers, as evidenced by the red seats and pictures of the brightest stars in franchise history, there have been rumors swirling around about the Oakland Raiders also playing their home games there in the not too distant future.
The Raiders currently share the Oakland County Coliseum with the Oakland A’s baseball team and would like to split away from the partnership.
“They have to make that determination, whether they’re in a new stadium in Oakland or whether they feel that it’s best to join this stadium,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, according to NBC Sports .
Goodell was present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarked that it was landmark day for the NFL. The 49ers have played the last 43 years at Candlestick Park.
"This is a long time in the making," 49ers CEO Jed York said. "Now, it's time to make some new memories in our new home."
