The New York Yankees continued their dominance of the Boston Red Sox in 2014 on Friday night. The Yankees have won six of the eight head-to-head matchups this season, picking up the opener of this weekend’s three-game set 6-0.
New York starter Vidal Nuno was sensational, striking out five and yielding just two hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings of work.
“He fights,” Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said in his postgame press conference on MLB.com. “It’s not a guy that throws 95; it’s not a guy with a wipeout slider; it’s a guy that goes out and competes and finds a way to get it done. You know that he doesn’t get intimidated by a situation; I like that about him. He’s very even-keeled. He gives you everything he’s got every time he goes out.”
Relievers Dellin Betances, Adam Warren and Matt Thornton finished the shutout for the Bombers, giving up only one hit.
The scoring for the Yankees was scattered throughout the game. First baseman Mark Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly in the first. In the fourth, a pair of homers made the score 4-0. Third baseman Kelly Johnson smacked a two-run shot to right. Left fielder Brett Gardner followed with a solo blast to right.
The final two runs came in the eighth inning, when catcher Brian McCann drove a two-run home run to the right field stands.
In his first game since turning 40, shortstop Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Boston starter Brandon Workman suffered the loss, going seven innings and being charged with four runs, according to ESPN.
The two teams continue the series in the Bronx on Saturday when Jon Lester and Masahiro Tanaka square off.
