Twin tornadoes strike Pilger, a small country town in Nebraska, leaving it nearly destroyed with at least one dead and sixteen critically injured.
According to CNN, Stanton county police sheriff Mike Unger reports that twin tornadoes are a rare phenomenon; the two tornadoes hit Monday night, sabotaging all of the town’s businesses and more than 40 homes. The small town has a popular of 350 and up to 75 percent of the town has been ruined. One 5 year old was pronounced dead as a result of the storm and another person died in a vehicle accident during the storm.
The storm left half of the Pilger school in shambles. The Lutheran church and a post office were also damaged. The Farmer’s Co-operative was completely left in ruins, Norfolk Daily News noted.
The tornadoes also affected cities Wisner, Stanton and Pender that were each about 40 miles away from one another and approximately an hour away from Omaha, Nebraska. The Regional Health services noted that 16 were injured with two dead in Pilger. Hospitals from the other areas the tornadoes affected reported 11 injured but no deaths
The American Red Cross offered aid and shelter at the Pilger- Wisner high school as soon as the storm ended. Nebraska governor Dave Heineman has declared a state emergency allowing the Nebraska national guard to take action.
