San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan isn’t going anywhere. It was announced on Monday that Duncan will exercise his option for the final year of his contract.
According to Yahoo Sports, which first reported the news, Duncan will make $10.3 next year. He will revisit his future next year when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. His contract expires in July 2015.
“I don’t have any plans on doing anything,” Duncan said before Game 5 of the NBA Finals. “I’m going to figure it out when it comes. I’m not saying I’m retiring. I’m not saying I’m not retiring. I’m not saying anything. I’m going to figure it out as it goes. I’ve always said if I feel like I’m effective, if I feel like I can contribute, I’ll continue to play. Right now I feel that way, so we’ll see what happens.”
When asked about retirement he said that he’s not at that point yet.
Duncan isn’t the only player returning to the Spurs. The Spurs will have their key players, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Tiago Splitter, Danny Green, and Kawhi Leonard, who are under contract for next season, according to Sports Illustrated. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is also under contract through the 2014-15 season.
Duncan was the number one pick in the 1997 draft. This past season he averaged 15.1 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game, according to the Associated Press. In the playoffs he averaged 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds, as he led the Spurs to the title. The title this past season was the fifth title for Duncan. He is a 14-time All-Star, a two-time MVP, and a three-time Finals MVP.
Next season Duncan will be one of the oldest players in the NBA. It will be interesting to see what he does next summer when he becomes a free agent.
