'The Fault In Our Stars' is dominating 'Edge of Tomorrow' at the box office

We are officially in summer blockbuster season, the time of year when studios roll out their big-budget star-studded movies in hopes of raking in grosses that feature (at least) nine figures.

This weekend brought moviegoers a showdown between the young-adult romantic drama The Fault In Our Stars and the Tom Cruise-driven action movie Edge of Tomorrow, and according to Deadline, early estimates indicate Fault In Our Stars is set to run away with the weekend.

The drama, based on the novel of the same name by John Green, took in $26 million on Friday to Edge's $10.7 million, reports LA Times.

The Fault in Our Stars is expected to bring in $50 million by the time the weekend is said and done, more than enough to consider it a success on a $12 million budget (according to Box Office Mojo

Starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, The Fault in Our Stars tells the story of a teenage cancer patient and amputee who meet in a support group and fall in love.

The trend of young adult novels being adapted in to massive films is nothing new, however typically the source material contains elements of fantasy or science fiction, such as in Harry Potter or Twilight. Regardless, this surprise success comes as a welcome break from the adrenaline-fueled flicks the rest of the summer should provide us.
