Mann is from Fort Worth, according to the Dallas News. She faced difficult competition for the award, including Erica Campbell, Donnie McClurkin, Tye Tribbett, and Hezekiah Walker.
Mann is an American actress and gospel singer. She is known for her role as Cora in Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and Meet the Browns. Before becoming a solo artist, Mann sang the gospel group, Kirk Franklin and the Family.
Mann’s albums included Gotta Keep Movin’, The Master Plan, and Best Days. She is married to David Mann, an actor who also appears in some of Tyler Perry’s plays.
The awards aired live from the Nokia Theatre on Sunday. Among the other events of the awards, Pharrell Williams, winner of male R&B/ pop artist, thanked his family and the people who brought the song, “Happy,” to Number 1 status.
