Seattle anesthesiologist Dr. Arthur K. Zilberstein has had his medical license suspended for sending sexually explicit text messages multiple times a day while supervising surgeries.
The Washington Post reports that Washington State health authorities said that Dr. Zilberstein, age 47, put his patients at risk because of his “preoccupation with sexual matters.”
The official statement of Zilberstein’s charges states that during a cardiac probe insertion procedure, he exchanged 26 text messages “including explicit sexual comments.”
During a Cesarean stomach surgery, he reportedly exchanged 45 texts containing sexual innuendo in less than an hour and a half.
Zilberstein received his anesthesiologist and surgeon license from Washington state in 1995, and has been practicing medicine ever since. It was through Physicians Anesthesia Services that Zilberstein was contracted to work a Swedish Medical Center. It was at this care facility that his wrongdoings were carried out.
NBC News reports that hospital spokesperson Clay Holtzman said, “The safety of our patients is our number one priority. Once we learned that the state had suspended this physician’s medical license, the physician’s medical staff membership and privileges were immediately suspended. We just recently learned of these allegations and are conducting our own internal review of the physician, who is not directly employed by Swedish.”
Zilberstein will not be permitted to practice medicine in Washington until his charges are resolved. He now has 20 days to respond to his charges and request a hearing.
