Same-sex marriage now legal in Illinois

Couples of the same sex can now legally wed in the state of Illinois.

The law took effect Sunday, June 1, but most clerks said they plan to issue licenses the following day.

Both The Chicago Tribune and The Salt Lake Tribune reported the news on Sunday.

Gay-rights advocacy group Equality Illinois predicts that about 1.30 0 marriage licenses have been issued since Governor Pat Quin signed the law back in November. The group's CEO, Bernard Cherkasov calls Sunday a “history-making day in Illinois.”

Same-sex couples of have civil unions will be able to convert them into marriage licenses with the date on which they had their civil union ceremonies.

Lake County Clerk Willard Helander issued the county's first civil union three years ago. She expects “quite a few” couples will be showing up Monday morning to obtain their marriage license.

Chief Deputy County Clerk Paul Hinds in DuPage County predicts that there will be a morning rush on Monday, with same-sex couples hurrying in to convert their unions to licenses.
