The rape and murder of two Indian teenagers have sparked outrage through the country. But the comments on the issue made by Indian officials have baffled many.
According to the Agence France-Presse , Ramsevak Paikra who is a part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party, was asked about the gruesome murder of the two girls.
“Some incidents do not happen deliberately. These kinds of incidents happen accidentally,” Paikra said.
Women’s groups have expressed anger in the comments, demanding he apologize.
Paikra is not the first official to make controversial rape remarks.
In April, Mulayam Singh Yadav opposed capital punishment for rape, reported The Indian Express .
“Boys will be boys, they commit mistakes,” Yadav said.
He went on to that when the friendship between a male and female have their differences, rape charges are brought up.
Indian has been in the spotlight since the string of high profile rapes, beginning with the Delhi gang rape in 2012.
