Pirates top Mets in extra innings

Josh Harrison delivered plenty of excitement for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday.
In the 10th inning, Harrison reached base with a leadoff single. In an attempt to steal second he found himself in the middle of a long rundown and eventually navigated to second successfully. He got stranded on third base as the side was retired and the game progressed to the 11th inning.
When he came to bat in the 11th, his heroics were put on display as he smacked a double to deep right that scored Clint Barmes to give Pittsburgh a walk-off victory.
“Fastball out over the plate,” Harrison said describing the pitch his walk-off hit after the game on MLB.com. “I was being aggressive and found a gap, and I knew if I did, [Barmes] was going to be able to score.”
Prior to Harrison’s RBI double in the 11th, all the scoring was done in the fourth inning. The Mets seized a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Lucas Duda. Jordy Mercer tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run single of his own.
Both starting pitchers had similar lines. Pittsburgh’s Brandon Cumpton went seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out four. New York’s Jacob DeGrom lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and fanning four.
Jared Hughes, who pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th for the Pirates, recorded his fourth win of the season. Vic Black gave up the walk-off hit to Harrison and suffered the loss.
Mets’ third baseman David Wright was scratched from the game about an hour and a half before first pitch and returned to New York on Saturday for an MRI on his left shoulder, reports The Associated Press.
