Pilot dead after plane crash during Stevens Point, Wisconsin air show

A small place crashed during an air show in Wisconsin, killing the 47-year-old pilot.

According to The Washington Post, the crash occurred at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport at around 12:20 p.m.

While police haven't released the name of the pilot, they did say that the plane crashed about 1,000 feet east from the airport runway after aerial maneuvers that were being performed during an aerobatics portion of the show.

The crash brought the show to a sudden end, the airport was closed early as well.

The Journal Sentinel reports that witnesses saw the plane spiraling toward the ground and then crashing into some trees.

"I couldn't believe what I saw," said 72-year-old Melvin Burskey of Neenah. "There was a puff of smoke, then it went down."

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation. Police are also asking anyone that has a video of the accident to please contact Detective Sgt. Joe Gruber at (715) 346-1518.
