MIT grad student dies in India

Kaitlin R. Goldstein, a graduate student at MIT, has died after suffering a fall in a remote region of India.

The MIT News site reported that the fourth-year grad student's body was found on Saturday, June 21, in a ditch below the trail where she had gone for a run on the morning of June 14. Goldstein, 28, reportedly slid hundreds of feet off a cliff after slipping on a loose rock.

The university's president, L. Rafael Reif, reported the sad news to the university via email.

“As Kate’s family and friends bear this sorrow, we offer them the sympathy and support of the MIT community,” Reif wrote. “The death of someone so young and promising is a terrible loss; we should all take time to reach out to those around us.”

According to The Associated Press, the 28-year-old student was a competitive runner, and she was working toward her doctorate degree in architecture. She had been in India since June 7, participating on an energy and development workshop on the campus of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh located close to the city of Leh.
