For many sushi lovers, there is nothing better than a roll of unagi, or freshwater eel, particularly Japanese eel. However, sushi lovers might be turning to California rolls for a while, as earlier this week the Japanese eel was added to the endangered list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), increasing the force behind efforts to industrially farm eels.
BBC News, there has not been much success, due to Japanese eel’s migration patterns and their tendency to spawn in far-flung locations.
Still, chair of the IUCN Anguillid Specialist Sub-Group Dr Matthew Gollock states in an IUCN news report that the listing is a good thing, as, “This information will allow us to prioritize conservation efforts for eel species and the freshwater ecosystem more broadly.”
